SPRING TOUR 2009

U-PLANT PIZZA GARDEN

Dempsey Corner Orchards, is happy to announce our spring tour program.   We are located just minutes from exit 16 on the 101 highway in the Annapolis Valley.  At the top of the ramp from exit 16 you need to turn North and proceed to the first stop sign, which is about two and a half kilometers.  From there you will see our bright pink sign telling you to turn right onto Route #221.  Our civic address is 2717 or one and a half kilometers from the corner.  We are very easy to find.  There are plenty of signs to show the way.

Once you arrive we have several options for you.  The large play area is available for the children to get out and stretch their legs when they first arrive.  After they have burned off some steam the tour will begin.

We start with an introduction to the staff and some basic farm safety rules.  The group will then be divided into smaller groups of 20-25 children.   There are five interactive learning stations that each child will visit.

1)      The Petting Zoo:  A guide will take them through the petting zoo and introduce the children to each animal (cow   and calf, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits and chickens.)  They will be given enough time to interact with each animal as they feel comfortable.  While they are there, the guide will discuss which of these animals help to making  a pizza  (eg. cows make milk and milk makes cheese).

2)   Earth Station:  This is where the children will be shown the different parts of the soil. There is sand, finished compost, peat moss and clay.  The guide will talk about the different parts of the soil and how each one is important to the growth of the plant.  The children will then be given their own pot to fill and given the chance to make their own earth mixtures.

3)      U Plant Pizza :  Part of our fields will be marked out as a giant pizza .  Inside each “slice” of the pizza is  a different ingredient that goes into a pizza.  The guide will talk about the different plants there, how they grow and what part of them is used to make this favorite food.  The children will enter the pizza slice as each ingredient is talked about and  pick one to plant in their own pot.  There will be tomato plants, pepper plants, herb plants, onion sets and Durham wheat.  At the end of the tour each child gets to take their pizza garden home with them!

4)      Tomato Sauce:  At this station the guide will start with whole tomatoes and a  variety of herbs.  The children will get to smell each of the herbs and decide if they do, or do not, smell like something from a pizza.  The herbs they choose will be added to the blender full of pasta tomatoes and whipped into a home made tomato sauce ,right before their eyes!  Those brave enough, will be given the opportunity to sample the new sauce they have just made.

5)      Pizza Dough:  Here, a guide will let each child have a chance to grind their own Durham wheat into flour with a hand grinder.  They will then add salt, pepper, baking soda and water to make real pizza dough.  They can then play with it, roll it out, spin it on the backs of their hands like the pro’s and …feed it to the pigs.

At lunch they will be served their very own slice of hot pepperoni and cheese pizza and a cold bottle of water or milk.   There are both indoor and outdoor facilities for eating.

To wrap the day up, there will be a scavenge hunt in the orchard!  This will give the children a chance to visit the apple blossoms as they are meant to be experienced: running freely through them and breathing deeply.

The prices are as follows:
